THE PENNY TEST: HOW TO CHECK YOUR TIRE TREAD IN 10 SECONDS

Close-up of tire tread showing tread depth and groove patterns

You've got a penny in your cup holder right now. Grab one, because that single cent is the fastest tire safety tool you'll ever use. Ten seconds per tire. No tools, no equipment, no appointment. Just you, Abe Lincoln, and a quick look at your rubber.

How the Penny Test Works

Hold the penny with Lincoln's head pointing down and stick it into one of the grooves in your tire tread. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, your tread is below 2/32 of an inch, the legal minimum in New Jersey. That tire needs to come off your car today. Stopping distances on wet pavement at 2/32 are scary: 100+ extra feet at highway speeds compared to new tires. If the tread covers part of Lincoln's head, you're still in the safe zone.

New tires ship with 10/32 to 11/32 of an inch of tread, and it drops slowly at first, then faster. The two thresholds to remember: 2/32" means replace immediately, and 4/32" means start shopping. Some people use a quarter instead. Washington's head sits at about 4/32. Penny for the danger zone, quarter for the planning zone.

Check Multiple Spots and Read the Wear Patterns

Most people check one groove, see tread, and figure they're good. But tires don't wear evenly. The inside edge might be gone while the outside looks fine. Check at least three spots on each tire: inside edge, center, and outside edge, at two or three points around the circumference. If one area is significantly more worn than another, that's your car waving a flag: both edges worn means under inflation, center worn means over inflation, one edge worn means an alignment problem, and random bald patches mean worn shocks or unbalanced tires.

Uneven wear doesn't just mean you need new tires. It means something caused it. If you don't fix the underlying issue, your next set wears out the same way. Don't be that person.

Make It a Habit

Check your tread once a month. You're already at the gas station or parked in the driveway. Just bend down and look. Takes less time than scrolling your phone while the pump runs.

If the penny tells you bad news, swing by 568 Madison Ave. We'll measure your tread with a proper depth gauge and give you real options, not a hard sell. We'd rather you drive safe than squeeze another thousand miles out of a tire that can't grip.
